Public Access To The Salt Pans.

Discover the Salt Pans via the Walking Trails

The salt pans are part of Curaçao’s characteristic coastal landscape and have formed naturally over time. These shallow lagoons were created where seawater could flow into low-lying coastal areas. Under the island’s strong sun the water gradually evaporates, leaving behind the highly saline conditions that define the salt pans today.

A new walking path has been cleared along the right hand side of the site and is clearly marked with new signage. Accessible via the parking area, this route allows visitors to walk safely towards the salt flats while enjoying the surrounding natural landscape.

We are pleased to make this area more accessible and to contribute to an enjoyable outdoor experience for all visitors.

The Unique Nature of the Salt Pans

These unique conditions create an ideal habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. One of the most iconic visitors is the Caribbean flamingo, which can often be seen feeding in the shallow waters. The high salt content encourages the growth important food sources for these birds. Their diet is also what gives flamingos their distinctive pink color.
